10-key calculator

10-Key Calculator

Dated tech lacking chic vintage form, a clink and clank of keys welcoming a certain sexual vigor before succumbing to the stick of the number 7 key. No more than six or so seconds of video is needed to deliver home the irony – none of this is sexy, but the charm alone too deadpan to ignore.

The 10-key calculator skills video is a punctual move. No desperation included, just the sweet satisfying sound of a zip seal on a Zip-Lock EZ seal bag. A move so uncommon, I use it on girls I have only moderate interest in. Too easy like ripped from the pages of a book I wrote, an identity crisis forthcoming as predictable as this Monday.

Star key. Print. Rip the receipt. Fun fact: The minus button is pressed after the input.

night time driving

night time driving

Again, I’ve left her apartment past midnight. On a work night at that. What a stupid term – work night. Much like school night. Why bother describing the evening if your mind is on the next day?

She moved further out to a more accepted part of the city. Target Superstore nearby. Chik-Fil-A drive-thru line regularly wrapped around it. Extending my drive to 7-8 excruciating minutes of slightly worn Interstate. Apartment complex, fairly new. Parking spaces limited, so three buildings away it is. Eventually I make it to my car.

Four speed bumps later, the next obstacle – the gate. How close to approach before it starts opening? Here’s an inch. Nothing. Okay, another. Nothing. Fine, take a couple of feet. WHOOSH! Oh shit, reverse reverse reverse!

Now I wait. The street is running perpendicular up ahead. A dead and clear backdrop. Nothing to contemplate or dream of. Just the 7-8 minutes between this gate and my bed.

dottie – part

Everything feels carefully placed, yet everything feels so effortless. Piecing together a story with no sense of strain or expectation. The number one rule here is : let go if you wish to hold on.

‘Part’ is an experience that thrives in its aesthetic. Audibly, visually, perhaps even spiritually. Each song title represented by one word to maintain a discipline to not overthink itself. If you’re working to seek out a message, then you are trying too hard.

There is a patient calmness that Dottie puts in to all seven songs. Not one piece of this album felt created by any forced brainstorming session, but at a pace that only answered to small opportunistic moments of inspiration.

‘quarters on the quarter’ – 2nd qtr. 2019

Quarters on the Quarter

seventeen years : lp17

It feels unusual to praise an album for efficiency, but ‘LP17′ is a showcase for such the description. Everything works in Seventeen Years’ latest release.  Each song is consistent within a two to three minute range with compact synchronization of flowing synths, bouncing guitars, and sleek programming. Most notable is that all this flies without sacrificing effective and impactful songwriting. Efficiently executed.

recommended song : ‘dread pt. 2’

clouds are learning : clouds are learning

Full disclosure : Prepare yourself for a CAL love fest (see Spare Change below). The self-titled album from Argentina’s Clouds are Learning is an euphoric ambient experience best approached in its entirety – super suggested for sleep or night time listening. Each track begins quietly with a layer of white noise before trekking back and forth between gazey guitars,  field recording samples, background synths, and relaxing beats, all while avoiding any dull ambient repetition.

recommended song : ‘broken april promises’

blankenberge : more

Let’s face it. These guys are on another level. ‘More’ expands on what was already a wildly unique blend of shoegaze, dreampop, and post-rock to include new instrumentation and cleaner elements without jeopardizing the familiar yet contagious sound from ‘Radiogaze’ and ‘Blankenberge’ EP. Also worth noting is the newfound focus on the technical craft of each song, allowing Blankenberge first class access to said other level.

recommended song : ‘islands’

trillion : when i wake

How does this EP make me feel? I imagine adventuring across seven different terrains spanning the four seasons battling giants, demons, bears, and other ghouls that only the imagination of an only child like myself could conjure. I see myself falling in love with a siren bathing near the shore, meeting worthy comrades who assist in the slaying of previously mentioned beasts, all to discover at the end of the journey the quest was what I sought all along.

TLDR: Noisy, guitar ear-breaching, textural and drone-y, satisfying and lengthy (in the good way)

recommended song : ‘circles around me’

clouds are learning : stolen youth feat. kizzylotus

As previously mentioned, this entire album is best experienced as a whole. Still, Stolen Youth is an exceptional piece I was drawn to instantly and repeatedly. With an incredible trance-like background accompanied by haunting and melancholy vocals capturing feelings of longingness, Stolen Youth navigates its thematic angles perfectly. You should let it haunt you sometime soon.
